PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haiti’s worsening gang crisis has reached another dangerous point after armed groups attacked an armored vehicle carrying Salvadoran military personnel serving with an international security force, leaving four men unaccounted for and raising fresh concerns about efforts to restore order in the troubled Caribbean nation.

According to an Associated Press report published Monday, October 19, the attack occurred Sunday in Croix-des-Bouquets, an area near the Haitian capital that has been heavily affected by gang control and violence.

El Salvador’s armed forces said the four aviation technicians were returning to their camp when their vehicle was attacked with gunfire and explosives before catching fire.

The men reportedly escaped the burning vehicle, but authorities had not established contact with them as of Monday.

Attempts to reach the area by land and air were hindered by intense fighting. Helicopters deployed during the response also came under fire, according to Salvadoran military officials.

The attack represents a major test for the international Gang Suppression Force, which was established to help Haitian authorities confront armed criminal groups that have expanded their territorial control and undermined public security.
