PUERTO RICO, October 12, 2026 — Violent crime has cast a shadow over Puerto Rico's October holiday weekend, with multiple fatal shootings, a mass shooting in Río Piedras and several other homicide investigations keeping police busy across the island.
According to reporting by Metro Puerto Rico, police initially reported five killings and 11 people wounded by gunfire during the long weekend associated with the October 12 holiday.
Subsequent reports on Monday morning described three additional killings in the Bayamón police region, indicating that the death toll may have increased as investigations continued. The figures should not be combined into a final official total without confirmation from police.
Mass shooting in Río Piedras leaves three dead
--------------------
One of the most disturbing incidents occurred early Sunday morning at Zoila's Café, on Robles Street in the Capetillo neighborhood of Río Piedras.
At least three people were killed and several others wounded when gunfire erupted at the establishment. Initial reports indicated that the shooting occurred at approximately 2:27 a.m., with investigators examining whether an argument inside the business preceded the attack.
Police investigators and homicide detectives responded to the scene as authorities worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify those responsible.
Reports differed on the number of people injured, with preliminary accounts placing the figure at eight or nine. The final number requires official confirmation.
The attack has renewed concerns about the danger posed by gun violence in public gathering places, where innocent people can become victims of shootings.
Fatal shootings reported in Guaynabo and Toa Alta
------------------
Another deadly shooting was reported Saturday night in Guaynabo, where a 34-year-old man, identified by police as Luis Yoniel Pérez Hernández, was fatally shot.
According to Telemundo Puerto Rico, two other people were wounded in the incident, including the victim's five-year-old daughter. The child was reported to be in stable condition, while a 27-year-old wounded man was described as being in serious condition.
Investigators have not established a motive for the attack.
In Toa Alta, a 36-year-old man, identified as Geovannie Manuel Marrero Hernández, was found shot to death inside a white Dodge Durango on PR-142, in the Marzan sector. The discovery followed a traffic stop approximately an hour earlier, according to El Nuevo Día.
The circumstances surrounding the killing remain under investigation.
Three additional killings reported Monday
-----------------
On Monday morning, Puerto Rico police reported three killings within minutes of one another in the Bayamón police region.
According to Primera Hora, the incidents occurred in Guaynabo's Santa Rosa III neighborhood, along PR-167 in Bayamón's Algarrobo sector, and along PR-629 in the Sabana neighborhood of Vega Baja.
The victims were men who had sustained gunshot wounds. Investigators were responding to the scenes and gathering evidence as the investigations continued.
The incidents added to the weekend's mounting concerns about shootings and homicides across the island.
Police investigations continue
--------------------
Authorities are working to determine the motives behind the shootings, establish whether any of the incidents are connected and identify the people responsible.
Investigations into deadly shootings typically involve interviews with witnesses, forensic examinations and the collection of evidence from crime scenes. Police have not publicly established a common motive linking the incidents described in this report.
A continuing public-safety concern
------------------------
The violence highlights the continuing challenge of protecting residents and visitors from gun-related crime during holidays and other periods when people gather at restaurants, businesses and entertainment venues.
For families affected by the killings, the consequences extend well beyond the crime scenes. Each homicide leaves loved ones grieving and communities seeking answers about how the violence occurred and whether those responsible will be brought to justice.
As the investigations proceed, residents are encouraged to report information that may assist authorities and to contact police rather than confront suspected offenders themselves.
