U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — The Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) is investigating a violent assault captured in a video circulating on social media that shows two young men beating another young man, prompting widespread condemnation from government officials.
According to local media reports published October 28, police confirmed that the victim and suspects have been identified and that all are minors.
The department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau and Juvenile Bureau are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime amid concerns that the victim may have been targeted because of his actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.
Governor Albert Bryan Jr. and Education Commissioner Dionne Wells-Hedrington condemned the attack, calling for accountability, support for the victim and stronger efforts to address bullying, hatred and youth violence. Bryan also called for coordination with the Department of Justice and federal authorities to determine whether hate-crime charges are warranted.
Authorities have not publicly established the motive for the assault, and no charges were confirmed in the reports reviewed.
The Department of Education is cooperating with law enforcement and supporting the affected student.
Officials are urging anyone with information to contact police and asking the public to stop sharing the video to protect the victim’s privacy and emotional well-being.
The investigation remains ongoing.
