PUERTO RICO — November 1, 2026 — Puerto Rico is beginning November with a sobering weekend of crime, traffic fatalities and other troubling incidents, as authorities reported multiple deaths and violent episodes across the island during the Halloween weekend.

According to the Puerto Rico Police Bureau's weekend report, covering Friday, October 30, through Sunday, November 1, the island recorded two murders, two fatal traffic accidents, two suicides and three people injured in shootings.
Two Murders Reported in Southern Puerto Rico
The two homicides occurred Saturday in separate municipalities.
The first was reported shortly after midnight on Modesto Vélez Street in Santa Isabel, where officers discovered a man who had been shot and killed. The victim had not been identified in the initial report.
Later that evening, another fatal shooting occurred at the intersection of Campos and Caracas streets in the Bélgica neighborhood of Ponce, near the business La Otra Esquina. That victim also remained unidentified in the initial police report.
Two Fatal Traffic Accidents Claim Lives
Traffic accidents also claimed two lives over the weekend.
On Friday morning, 18-year-old Yamila Monserrate Flores of Gurabo died after the vehicle she was driving struck a steel barrier along Highway PR-30 in Caguas.
Early Sunday morning, 32-year-old Ashley Cristal Arroyo Maldonado of Guayanilla died after her vehicle struck a concrete fence in the Parcelas Macana area.
Two Suicides Reported
Police also reported two suspected suicide deaths.
One involved 47-year-old Josué Dávila Dones, who was found dead Friday in the Los Pérez sector of Valenciano Arriba in Juncos.
The second incident was reported Sunday in the Polvorín neighborhood of Manatí, where a 58-year-old woman was found dead at her residence.
These deaths underscore the importance of mental health awareness, community support and ensuring that people experiencing emotional distress have access to help.
Three People Wounded in Shootings
Authorities additionally reported three shooting victims in separate incidents on Sunday. The shootings occurred in Isla Verde, Santa Isabel and Aguas Buenas.
The incidents added to an already troubling weekend of violence across the island.
Murders and Traffic Fatalities: 2026 Statistics
Despite the weekend's tragedies, police statistics show that Puerto Rico has recorded fewer murders and fatal traffic accidents compared with the same period last year.
As of November 1, the island had recorded 365 murders in 2026, compared with 383 during the corresponding period in 2025.
Fatal traffic accidents totaled 198 this year, compared with 220 during the same period last year.
While those figures indicate a decline, the latest incidents serve as a reminder of the continuing challenges facing communities throughout Puerto Rico.
As November begins, public safety, road awareness, violence prevention and mental health support remain important concerns for residents and authorities alike.
