KFC and Taco Bell Restaurants Shut Down Across Puerto Rico Following Franchise Termination; USVI Locations Not Expected to Be Affected

Yum! Brands ends relationship with Encanto Restaurants, while preliminary information indicates U.S. Virgin Islands restaurants operate under separate franchise ownership
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — November 3, 2026
Customers across Puerto Rico are facing the sudden closure of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Taco Bell restaurants following a major franchise dispute between parent company Yum! Brands and Encanto Restaurants, the company responsible for operating both fast-food chains on the island.
The announcement, made Monday, November 2, has resulted in the temporary closure of all KFC and Taco Bell locations in Puerto Rico as Yum! Brands moves to find a new franchise operator to take over the businesses.
In a statement, Yum! Brands said it made the difficult decision to end its relationship with Encanto Restaurants because the company could no longer operate in a manner that met its standards.
The company, however, emphasized that it remains committed to Puerto Rico and is working as quickly as possible to welcome customers back.
KFC and Taco Bell have also indicated that they are seeking new franchise partners, although no reopening date has been announced.
Thousands of Workers and Businesses Affected
The development represents a significant disruption to Puerto Rico's fast-food industry. Encanto Restaurants reportedly operates approximately 180 restaurants across its business portfolio, including KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and IHOP, and employs more than 3,000 people.
KFC has maintained a presence in Puerto Rico since 1967, while Taco Bell began operating on the island in 1985.
The sudden shutdown raises questions about the future of employees, restaurant operations and the search for a replacement franchise operator capable of managing the businesses.
For now, Yum! Brands has not identified a new operator or provided a specific timeline for reopening.
What Does This Mean for KFC in the U.S. Virgin Islands?
While the Puerto Rico announcement has raised questions about KFC operations throughout the Caribbean, preliminary information obtained by Freedom City Times from individuals familiar with the local restaurant operations indicates that the situation is not expected to affect KFC restaurants in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
According to information shared with the publication, the KFC operations in the Virgin Islands are under separate franchise ownership from the Encanto Restaurants operation in Puerto Rico.
That distinction is important because the termination of a franchise agreement with one operator does not automatically mean that other independently operated franchise locations must close.
As of Tuesday, there has been no confirmed announcement indicating that KFC restaurants in St. Croix or elsewhere in the U.S. Virgin Islands will be affected by the Puerto Rico shutdown.
Freedom City Times has also sought clarification from Yum! Brands regarding the ownership structure of the Virgin Islands locations and whether any business relationship exists between the local franchise operators and Encanto Restaurants.
The publication is seeking official confirmation to provide customers and employees in the territory with a clearer understanding of the situation.
A New Operator Could Bring KFC Back to Puerto Rico
Despite the closures, the situation does not necessarily signal the permanent departure of KFC or Taco Bell from Puerto Rico.
Yum! Brands has indicated that it intends to restore operations by bringing in a new franchise partner.
The challenge will be finding an operator capable of taking over the restaurants, maintaining the brands' standards and restoring services to customers across the island.
For thousands of employees and loyal customers, the hope is that a new agreement can be reached sooner rather than later.
For residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands, however, the available preliminary information suggests that the Puerto Rico situation is a separate franchise matter, with no immediate indication of a disruption to local KFC operations.
Freedom City Times will continue following developments and will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
