VIWMA Issues Territorial Alert on Proper Disposal of Medical Sharps and Needles

ST. CROIX, U.S. Virgin Islands — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) has issued an urgent advisory reminding residents across the territory to safely manage and dispose of used needles, syringes, and other sharp medical instruments. The directive aims to protect sanitation technicians and the general public from accidental needlestick injuries and exposure to infectious materials during routine waste collection.

According to VIWMA Executive Director Hannibal "Mike" Ware, discarding loose medical sharps directly into household trash bags, bins, or recycling containers creates severe safety hazards for frontline sanitation personnel who handle municipal waste.

Key Safety Guidelines for Residents

To prevent accidental injuries, VIWMA urges community members to adhere to the following safety protocols:

  • Never dispose of loose needles or syringes directly into household trash bags, trash carts, or recycling containers.

  • Use proper containment: Place used needles and other sharps immediately into an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container. If unavailable, a heavy-duty plastic household container with a tight-fitting, puncture-resistant lid—such as a laundry detergent bottle—can be used.

  • Secure containers: Keep all sharps disposal containers securely closed and stored safely out of the reach of children and pets.

  • Consult professionals: Contact a healthcare provider, local pharmacy, or health authority for proper guidance on disposing of filled containers before throwing them away.
