WASHINGTON, D.C. — The 2026 United States midterm elections have delivered a series of historic victories across the country, with voters electing candidates who have broken longstanding barriers in race, gender and representation while reshaping the nation's political landscape.

From the election of the first Black woman governor in American history to the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate, the results represent a significant moment in the country's political history. The U.S. Virgin Islands also joined the historic celebrations, electing its first female governor.

Among the most significant victories was Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, who won Georgia's gubernatorial race, becoming the first Black woman elected governor in the United States. Her victory also makes her the first woman to lead Georgia as governor.

In New Mexico, Democrat Deb Haaland made history by becoming the first Native American woman elected governor. A member of the Laguna Pueblo community, Haaland previously served as U.S. Secretary of the Interior.

Texas also marked a historic political milestone with Democrat Gina Hinojosa's victory, making her the state's first Latina governor. Her win also ends the Republican Party's hold on the governor's office, which had lasted since 1990.

In Florida, Republican Byron Donalds became the state's first Black governor, marking another major milestone in the state's political history.

California also made history with Xavier Becerra's victory, making him the first Latino elected governor of the state.

The historic breakthroughs extended to the U.S. Senate. In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed became the first Muslim elected to the Senate, while New Hampshire's Chris Pappas made history as the first openly gay man elected to serve in the chamber.

Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan also made history with her election to the Senate, becoming the first Native American woman elected to that body.

Ohio voters elected Democrat Amy Acton as the state's first female governor, adding another milestone to an election night that saw women and historically underrepresented communities make significant gains.

U.S. Virgin Islands makes history

Closer to home, the U.S. Virgin Islands delivered a historic result of its own.

Delegate to Congress Stacey E. Plaskett was elected governor on November 3, becoming the first woman elected to lead the territory since Virgin Islanders gained the right to elect their own governor.

Plaskett and her running mate, Senate President Milton E. Potter, secured approximately 62.8 percent of the gubernatorial vote, defeating four independent tickets and avoiding a runoff.

The victory represents a major turning point in the territory's political history. For the first time, the U.S. Virgin Islands will have a woman occupying the territory's highest elected office.

The achievement places the Virgin Islands among the jurisdictions that experienced historic leadership changes during the 2026 elections and gives the territory a significant place in the national conversation about political representation.

Democrats take control of Congress

Beyond the historic individual victories, the elections also produced a major shift in Washington. Democrats secured control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, changing the balance of power in Congress and creating a significant political challenge for President Donald Trump's administration during the remainder of his term.

The results signal a major shift in the country's political direction, with Democrats gaining ground in several closely watched races and securing victories in states that had presented significant challenges in previous election cycles.

A defining moment in American politics

The 2026 elections will be remembered not only for the change in congressional leadership but also for the candidates who made history in their respective states.

From Georgia and New Mexico to Texas, Florida, California and the U.S. Virgin Islands, voters helped open doors that had remained closed for generations.

For the Virgin Islands, the election carries particular significance. The territory is not simply witnessing a change in administration; it is entering a new chapter in its political history with its first woman governor.

As the remaining election results are finalized and winners prepare to take office, the impact of the 2026 elections will extend well beyond Election Day.
