WASHINGTON, D.C. — November 3, 2026 — Democrats are making major gains in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, putting control of Congress in play and delivering a significant setback to Republicans as votes continue to be counted across the country.

The Democratic Party is projected to take control of the U.S. House of Representatives, according to election-night reporting, marking a major shift in Washington's political balance.

The battle for the U.S. Senate, however, remains unresolved.

Democrats scored an important victory in North Carolina, where former governor Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley, flipping a Republican-held Senate seat. In New Hampshire, Democrat Chris Pappas also defeated Republican John Sununu. Georgia Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff secured reelection.

What about the Senate?

-----------------------

Although Democrats have made important gains, they still need additional victories to secure a Senate majority. Republicans entered the election with a 53–47 advantage, counting the two independents who caucus with Democrats on the Democratic side.

The Senate outcome remains uncertain, with several closely contested races still being counted.

Why this matters

------------------------

If Democrats secure control of the House, they will gain greater influence over congressional investigations, legislation, federal spending and oversight of President Donald Trump's administration.

The Senate outcome will also be critical in determining the direction of legislation and the confirmation of presidential appointments during the remainder of Trump's term.

For now, the national election remains a developing story, with attention focused on the remaining Senate contests and the final House seat count.
